Changlun is the nearest town to the UUM Campus. It is also a main border town in Kedah, Malaysia. It is located in the district of Kubang Pasu, about 42 km north from Alor Setar and 8 km near Bukit Kayu Hitam. The construction of the North-South Expressway passing through Changlun has enabled the town to enjoy smooth development. The completed Changlun-Kuala Perlis Highway helps to speed up development in the town as well. Changlun is still under a rapid development however offers various amenities for visitors such as:

  • Supermarket: C-mart
  • Bank: Maybank, Public Bank, Bank Simpanan Nasional, and Ambank.

Jitra is the fourth largest town in Kedah after Alor Setar,Sungai Petani and Kulim. Located approximately 30 kilometres from Thailand border, Jitra becomes one of the many stops for tourists who came from the neighbouring country or Malaysian who wanted to visit Thailand. This town is about 25 km away from UUM Campus. Jitra can be reached by bus and car using the North North-South Expressway as one of the largest town in northern area, this town offers almost everything here.

  • Supermarket: C-mart, Jitra Mall, Aneka, Tesco, and Yawata.hh

Alor Setar

Alor Setar

Alor Setar is the capital and largest city of Kedah,Malaysia, and is one of the major cities on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Alor Setar is located 45 kilometres from the UUM Campus, 93 kilometres north of Penang, and 45 km from Malaysia's border withThailand.

The city is served by the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, which housed MAS, AirAsia and Malindo Air for air carrier. For the land routes, the North-South Expressway, the Shahab Perdana Bus Station and the Alor Setar railway station, connects this city to other parts of Peninsular Malaysia. The city also boasts the Kuala Kedah Jetty, which is served by ferries linking the city with the popular resort island ofLangkawi.

As major city, it’s governed various large supermarket scattered around the city and hotels for visitors accommodation.

Bukit Kayu Hitam


Bukit Kayu Hitam is Malaysia-Thailand Border. It marks the end of the North-South Expressway and the longest Malaysian road, which runs from Johor Bahru,Johor. The Bukit Kayu Hitam customs, immigration and quarantine checkpoint lies about 800m south of the actual border. The checkpoint and duty-free shopping complex is located near the border. Across the border to the north is the town of in the district of Sadao. To its south in Malaysia is the town of Changlun, which is about 10 kilometre away.

Midway between the Malaysia and Thai checkpoint is the duty-free shopping complex owned by Quintmas Sdn Bhd. Visitor from Malaysia can pass through the checkpoint to get to the duty-free shopping complex without going through immigration formalities. Some items is however not categorised as duty-free and will be subjected to tax. There is also a golf course located behind the duty-free shopping centre.



Arau is the royal capital of Perlis in Malaysia. It is located about 30 kilometres from UUM Campus and 14 kilometres southeast of the official state capital of Kangar, Perlis. This town housed the red-roofed Istana (Royal Palace) of Perlis. This town can also be reached by train before it last stop at Padang Besar.
